Cannon Beach Oregon .. Monday 8am 16Jan2012. Temp - 32. Sunrise 753a. Sunset 457p. Snow on the ground here this morning early. The sun peeked out before clouds rolled in and rain began to melt and wash away the white stuff. I drove back from Portland yesterday through the snow on Highway 26. It was beautiful. Tree branches were all covered. I stopped to shoot some of the beauty. For more of today's snow images click here. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon .. Sunday 3pm 08Jan2012. Temp - 50. Sunrise 757a. Sunset 447p. Sun, sun, sun. 50 degrees felt more like 60+. On my ride to Haystack and back I had to take off my jacket and then my sweater, down to my t-shirt. Not only was it warm, but it was bright - perfect day for a visit to the beach. Cannon Beach Oregon .. Saturday 11am 31Dec2011. New Year's Eve. Temp - 44. Sunrise 757a. Sunset 440p. Biked south on the beach to Hug Point. Tide was going out so I had lots of hard sand to ride on. Light wind was coming out of the East. With all the rain we had in the past week, there was lots of runoff onto the beach. Photo #1 is the old stage coach road at Hug Point - blasted out of the solid rock back in the early 1900's. Sandpipers scatter as a wave crashes over the old road. Cannon Beach Oregon .. Thursday 11am 22Dec2011. Solstice. Temp - 38. Sunrise 754a. Sunset 432p. Frost on the rooftop this am. And frost on the driftwood and rocks on the beach. As the sun rose and came in contact with the frost, it gave way to another dry clear day. We're getting real spoiled with all the nice winter days. One great beach-combing day after another. Cannon Beach Oregon .. Monday 100pm 19Dec2011. Temp - 45. Sunrise 753a. Sunset 432p. Low tide, bright sun, billowy clouds - just my kind of day. Solstice is just 3 days away. Days will begin to get longer after that. The December solstice will occur at 5:30am Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on December 22, 2011. It is known as the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere and the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere due to the seasonal differences. The date varies from December 20 to December 23. The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. The December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23. On this date, all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south receive 24 hours of daylight. The sun is directly overhead on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere during the December solstice. It also marks the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours for those living south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Those living or travelling south from the Antarctic Circle towards the South Pole will see the midnight sun during this time of the year. On the contrary, for an observer in the northern hemisphere (that's us), the December solstice marks the day of the year with the least hours of daylight for those living north of the Tropic of Cancer. Those living or traveling north of the Arctic Circle towards the North Pole will not be able to see the sun during this time of the year. December 20 and December 23 solstices occur less frequently than December 21 or December 22 solstices. The last December 23 solstice occurred in 1903 and will not occur again until the year 2303. A December 20 solstice has occurred very rarely, with the next one occurring in the year 2080. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon .. Saturday 1145am 19Nov2011. Temp - 43. Sunrise 720a. Sunset 442p. After a good two days of wind and rain, we've got a break. Was 34 degrees early this morning. I rode south to Humbug point. Image 1 is Lion Rock at Humbug Point. Image 2 is the north side of Jockey Cap Rock. There is still quite a bit of sand built up from the summer. This last storm didn't do too much to take it away. A warning went out this week about feeding the pelicans. Don't. You're not doing them any favors by getting them to depend on handouts. Sounds a bit like our government doesn't it? For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. There, you will also find today's photo and surf report from Mark Mekenes of Cannon Beach Surf. .. George
