Cannon Beach Oregon ... 1140am 29December2008. Temp - 46. The wind is blowing good out of the West/Northwest - making for a very chilly day for a temp of 46. The sun has made several appearances keeping things interesting especially when you add in the occasional rain. The week between Christmas and New Years is traditionally a busy one in downtown Cannon Beach, but not so this year. The shops are all open and ready but few takers are here to take advantage. Water has been over the road between here and Seaside during high tides for the past three days, but the road is open and passable. There is an ODOT camera that you can reach by going to the Transportation page of Cannon-Beach Net (www.cannon-beach.net/transpo.html). I just checked and the road is clear at this point. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. There, you will also find today's photo and surf report from Mark Mekenes of Cannon Beach Surf. .. George

Cannon Beach Oregon ... 310pm 25December2008. Temp - 39. It snowed this morning around 10 but it didn't stick. Then the sun began to play peek-a-boo for the rest of the day. Photos are from Silver Point. The wave action was extreme- pulling back a hundred yards or more before once again reclaiming the beach. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... 850am 20December2008. Temp - 34. Still snow on the ground. Slight wind from the East-NorthEast. Overcast sky but no precipitation. Sunrise 754a. Sunset 433p. Tides. In January 2007 snow covered the beach and Haystack Rock for most of the day. This was the first time I had seen this in my 30 years here in Cannon Beach. Now, in just 5 days, it has happened twice more. Sunday's snowfall was all but gone when Thursday night's hit. The photos above are from yesterday. What a wild day. The temperature hovered around freezing and just above with intermitent snowfall downpours interspersed with sunshine. I spent most of the daylight hours out photographing. Photo 4 is my wife Paula, daughter Christie and myself with the snowman we made on the beach in front of Mo's Restaurant and Tolovana Inn. The carrot nose was courtesy of Mo's. Someone saw what we were doing and came running out with it. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... 840am 14December2008. Temp - 33. Snow. Wind from the North-NorthEast. Sunrise 749a. Sunset 431p. Tides. It snowed overnight and everything was covered with a thin layer of white early this morning. The temperature was around 33 early and as the sun moved overhead, the temperature began to rise and the snow to melt. There was no snow on the beach or the rocks, but some on the larger drift logs. The hills behind town are covered. I took the first three photos from my roof, against the pleas of my wife. I have a roof gangplank and platform that I access through a skylight. I don't have to walk on a slope. With this cold weather snap, the ongoing lame economy and the fact that this is December and not July, things have been more than quiet around here. The lodging, restaurants, galleries and shops are eager to do some business. Tis the Season to come to Cannon Beach. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... 1230pm 12December2008. Temp - 47. Rain and Wind from the SW. Sunrise 748a. Sunset 431p. Tides. I took advantage of a short break in the rain and clouds to get these shots just after noon. The wind is blowing hard out of the West-SouthWest. A cold front is forecast to be headed our way, but for now the temperature is in the high 40's. Yesterday I got some great shots. The sky and lighting was very nice. I will see if I can find time to post some of those when I finish this. My trip to Sonoma and San Franscisco was great. We visited friends and family and my wife Paula and I got to spend some rare time away from our two teenagers. The drive was 12 hours each way so we stopped at Borders in Portland and picked up a couple books on CD. Our son Kyler is reading Wurthering Heights in his English Class so we decided to get it. It takes place in the early 1800's in England's Yorkshire Moors and was written by Emily Bronte in 1847. We only got half way through, so I can't say yet whether I'd recommend it, but I can say that I want to finish it. It may take a while as I don't spend much time in the car while here in Cannon Beach. That's one of the things I love about Cannon Beach. On another topic, I am still trying to figure out why this weblog is not picked up by Google Alerts for "Cannon Beach". Can you help me out? For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... 830am 03December2008. Temp - 48. Partly Cloudy. Sunrise 739a. Sunset 432p. Tides. The sun is breaking out. The forecast is for more sun. We'll take it. The above photos are from last night's monthly City Council meeting. Mayor Jay Raskin is seated in the middle with Nancy Giasson and Sam Steidel on his right hand and Jerome Arnold and Melissa Cadwallader on his left hand. City Planner Rainmar Bartl, City Attorney Tammy Herdener and City Manager Rich Mayes are on the far left with Police Chief Gene Halburton, Public Works Director Mark See and City Recorder Brandy Harker. on the far right. The issue being discussed was whether to permit Verizon to place a cell tower in town to improve cell reception. Ed Johnson made a passionate plea against allowing it based on potential health concerns with cell phone usage. Others voiced similar views, but in the end the Council granted permission. Tomorrow I am off to California for an extended weekend so no new photos will be up till next week. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page.
