Cannon Beach Oregon ... Sunday 830am 26April2009. Temp - 48. Sunrise 611a. Sunset 818p. Minus low tide this morning at 8am. I rode my bike south on the beach to Humbug Point. Lion Rock, at Humbug Point is on the right in photo 3. Photo 2 is Jockey Cap Rock. This angle is obviously where someone stood when naming it. The cap's bill is on the left. Lots of clammers out this morning. Photo 4 is at Silver Point. That orange color is not very common. Mark your calendar and plan to be here next weekend for Spring Unveiling - May 1, 2, 3. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Tuesday 730am 21April2009. Temp - 45. Sunrise 619a. Sunset 809p. In the high 30's this morning, but clear blue skies are letting the sun warm things up quickly. Contrary to the reports of fog on the coast by Portland media this morning, there is no fog here. Today photos are at Haystack Rock as the first rays of the sun strike its textured, multi-faceted surface. The rocks were alive with birds - gulls, cormorants, murres, oyster catchers and others. Signs of Spring are plentiful these days. May I suggest you mark you calendar and plan to be here the weekend after next for Spring Unveiling - May 1, 2, 3. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Saturday 9am 18April2009. Temp - 40. Sunrise 625a. Sunset 808p. In the 30's overnight, but warming up fast as the sun moves overhead. Lots of driftwood on the beach - some real big stuff too. The piece that I photographed today is near Silver Point. Its a really interesting trunk/base. I hope it stays around for a while for more photos in varying lighting. The other photos are at Silver Point. It is such an active point in terms of geology. The variety of shape, color and size of the rocks is like no other. The large portion that appears to have fallen away from the bank, lost a piece on its north side a couple years ago and now the very front, very large section seems to be separating more each year. Even so, my guess is that it will be many years before it falls away. See image #3. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Monday 8am 06April2009. Temp - 48. Sunrise 646a. Sunset 750p. Clear skies, with a layer of fog covering the beach early, but it's pretty much burned off now. Took a drive up to Ecola State Park at 7am. Found a couple tents set up in the picnic area. Before long, the park ranger showed up to infom the Michagan campers that camping was not allowed. He was very polite and did not ticket or lecture them, just let them know. Even before he approached them, one of them approached him to jump their car. He had to go back to his station for cables and came back to assist them. The tent did make a nice prop for my photo. The fog rose as I watched and photographed. Soon Haystack rock had disappeared. As the fog rose, it burned off and Haystack gradually and slowly became visible again. As I was driving down the hill out of the park, I saw elk so of course I stopped to see if they would hang around long enough for some portraits. They obliged. There was a group of 8 to 10 of them - all females. I left before they did. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Saturday 9am 04April2009. Temp - 48. Sunrise 650a. Sunset 747p. The sun is back. Blue skies reign. It feels like Spring. Most Washington schools had this last week off so this is a fitting reward for making Cannon Beach their getaway destination. The couple in photo #2 is from Bremerton. They asked me to take a picture with their camera so I got one with mine too. The tide was high, but there was still plenty of hard sand to ride and walk on. After the storms we have had recently, driftwood abounds. The teepee in photo #3 wasn't quite as elaborate as a cabin that was built a little further south. Tonight would be an excellent night for a beach bonfire, which by the way is allowed as long as it it built away from anything else that could catch on fire.
