Cannon Beach Oregon ... Saturday 930am 24Oct2009. Temp - 50. Sunrise 744a. Sunset 615p. The beauty of the beach is on display today. I rode my bike south to Hug Point and was caught quite by surprise as I was shooting photo #1. I was on the highest point on the old stage coach road cut into Hug Point shooting south as the waves crashed over the lower part of the old road. Just as I pressed the shutter I heard a wave crashing in my right ear and before I could react, I was drenched in salt water. The splash was over my head, completely drenching even my hat. As I lowered my arms water ran out of my right sleeve. My camera was drenched along with the rest of me. Water ran into my right boot. By the time the water hit me, it was on its way down as I was standing a little below the highest point at the edge. I had hoped to go on to the falls just beyond the point, but the waves continued to crash over the road so I headed north toward home, but not before wiping my camera down and testing to see if was still working. It was. Had I not had Nikon's top-of-the-line camera designed for the elements, I doubt it would still be working. Photo #2 was shot at Silver Point and #3 was at Humbug Point. (Between Silver Point and Hug Point) Photo #4 is a seabird warming up on the sand. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Sunday 930am 18Oct2009. Temp - 60. Sunrise 736a. Sunset 626p. Yesterday's rain left behind clouds and the storms at sea or maybe the tsunami in Somoa have delivered an abundance of kelp. This kelp is unlike that which we normally see. It is short and intact. Photos 3 and 4 are of it. Photo 3 is a little plantation created by a family enjoying the morning on the beach. The root base of the plants was such that they would stand. Kind of gives Cannon Beach and Haystack a tropical flavor. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Sunday 830am 11Oct2009. Temp - 45. Sunrise 727a. Sunset 738p. Nice 3-day weekend. Cold early, but sun is warming things up. Today's photos include a small dory boat lanching next to Haystack Rock. I've been away for a little over two weeks. Spent some time in Florida, then visited my daughter in NYC followed by 8 days in New England shooting fall foliage. Had a great trip. The colors were spectacular. I will be printing some for November's Stormy Weather Arts Festival. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page.
