Cannon Beach Oregon ... Sunday 10am 13Mar2011. Temp - 50. Sunrise 734a. Sunset 718p. Rain and wind today. Images are from downtown on Hemlock Street. Weather service is calling for high winds. Unlike Brookings in Southern OR, Crescent City in CA, Hawaii and of course the coast of Japan, we were spared here in Cannon Beach from the tsunami. Very early Friday morning (250am) the fire and police departments sounded a siren from a truck on my street and announced that we were to evacuate by 6am. We immediately turned on the TV and saw footage of the Tsunami in Japan. That was enough to motive us to pack and head for the hills. The wave was predicted to reach here at 730am. At 516am we headed east to Portland. There was little traffic going north on 101 to the junction with 26, where the Seaside traffic comes from. Once on 26 we quickly joined the line of cars headed east. Surprisingly we were the last car in line. As we passed Camp 18 (the restaurant) we saw the lot was full and cars were parked along the road. It was still dark. At first we thought that maybe there was a blockage on the road ahead, but there wasn't and we drove on. Eventually two cars were behind us, but both pulled off into the rest area at the summit and I saw that they were both county or state police cars. The drive to Portland was smooth with traffic moving very well. The tunnel, which is under night construction, was opened and we made it to Portland in near normal driving time. The Cannon Beach fire and police allowed people back into town around noon and the scare was over. We came back at sunset after I went to a scheduled pre-op appointment for a torn meniscus in my left knee and spent some time lusting after a Nikon D3s camera at Pro Photo Supply.
