Cannon Beach Oregon ... Sunday 10am 27Jun2010. Temp - 60. Sunrise 527a. Sunset 910p. Had a picture perfect day yesterday for the Plein Air and More art event followed by a very nice day again today. Today's pictures are where Ecola Creek first meets the beach. The old stump exposed by the low tide is the remains of a giant spruce which looks to have had nearly an 8 foot diameter. Ecola Creek is currently traveling north on the beach nearly to the Surfsand Resort before empyting into the ocean. Photo 3 is Chapman Point. Even with a minus tide this morning, I was not able to get around Chapman Point to Crescent Beach because of the lack of sand built up there. Photo 4 is the just-opened Castaways Tini Tiki Hut restaurant by chef Josh Tuckman, formerly of Cannon Beach Cafe. Stop in and say hi to Josh and try out his new menu. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Thursday 9am 17Jun2010. Temp - 55. Sunrise 525a. Sunset 908p. "Sam's Dragon", the community sand sculpture built yesterday, survived through the night and the light rain with only slight damage. Sam's Dragon is a prelude to this weekend's 46th annual Sandcastle Contest. Two master plots will begin sculpting at 930am with others beginning at 1030am just north of Haystack Rock. All sculpting is to be complete and judged by 130pm and all cars off the beach by 3pm to avoid the tide. From the beach to the dowtown park for a barbeque on the steps of the Information Center and a concert in the band shell. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Saturday 7am 12Jun2010. Temp - 50. Sunrise 525a. Sunset 906p. Minus low tide this morning accompaned by sunshine. The gulls, puffins, cormorants and murres were all abuzz around Haystack Rock. Photos 3 and 4 are of rippled sand as a result of the receding tide. On my ride from Tolovana to the mouth of Ecola Creek, there were several large areas covered with pools surrounded by rippled sand. The For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page. Cannon Beach Oregon ... Thursday 8am 10Jun2010. Temp - 54. Sunrise 525a. Sunset 905p. Got a call this morning saying there were two eagles at the mouth of the creek at Tolovana Park. I jumped on my bike and headed over. When I got there they were gone, but I did see one soaring high overhead a few minutes later. Eagle sightings are not quite as unusual anymore, although they are not common - at least not on the beach. The rain was coming down lightly but I headed south with the wind to my back to Silver Point where I came upon a 6-inch round float in the surf hosting a community of barnacles. They were very active, opening and closing as I watched the tide occassionally wash over them. For today's surf shot go to the SurfCam page.
