11/21/07 Twas the day before Thanksgiving, and all through the house not a creature was stirring, save George at his computer wanting to get a message out to family and friends announcing that at long last, photos from the USA and Canada trips are up. Part 1 (of an unknown number of parts) starts in Oregon and follows the Travelin Vetters south and then west. There is a link (Family USA Part 1) at the very bottom of www.GeorgeVetterFotoArt.com. The images can be viewed individually or as a slide show. Unless you are a graduate of the Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Academy, you probably won’t be able to read my captions in slide show mode. There are 170 images so you may want to put on your favorite music first. These images are geared toward family and friends, especially those we visited along the way. The entire 2.5 month, 11,000 mile trip yielded about 4000 images which I edited down to 2400. You’ll have to come here if you want to see them all, but I still have more to share and will maybe get them out before Christmas. Images that I printed for my gallery from my Canada and Alaska trip are also up. You will see them when you go to the link mentioned above.

If you are just curious to see some of the images, you can stop reading here.

For those curious to know more about the Travelin Vetter’s escapades, read on.

I must first apologize to anyone who tried to follow our travels by coming to this page. I had every intention to post photos and stories as we traveled but that was before I got behind the wheel of the Georgetown. The two main things needed for me to complete that task were in very short supply – time and Internet access. Paula did not like driving so almost all those 11,000 miles were mine. Before leaving, I assumed we would have Internet access just about everywhere, after all this is the United States of America. We bought an Air Card in California from the new AT&T and were promised Internet service anywhere that we could get a cell phone signal. Not! Well ok maybe we could get a signal, but not for long enough to get anything done other than become extremely frustrated. Paula was ready to storm the next new AT&T store we saw. We had also figured that we would have wireless Internet access at RV parks. Not! Well, many of them advertised it, but few delivered. I would say it is safe to say that RV Park owners as a group are technologically challenged. Those whose systems actually worked had signals that reached to about the third RV in a row of 20. Anyway because of lack of time and access, you’ve had to wait till now to hear about our big adventure in what Christie and Kyler called “the big rolling turd”.

In fairness to the RV, it was brand new. We took it on its maiden voyage. It had two pop-outs, 3 TV’s, refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, double sink, bunk beds, sofa sleeper, bathroom, shower, a ton of storage and 75 gallon gas tank. Thirty-five feet long and 12 feet high, the Georgetown drove nothing like a car. At 50-55 mph it was pretty quiet and smooth. At least until a semi came barreling around you. The aerodynamics between the RV and the semi would “throw” the RV to the right and if you didn’t counter steer, you would end up on the line listening to the whine or thumping of the tires over the paint. It was pretty much a both hands on the wheel trip from start to finish.

We had reserved the RV for April 25th and when that day came, we were far from ready. We had been working all day, every day for over a week packing all our personal belongings into half of the garage, the attic and a small room on the first floor. The rest of the house was to be managed by Cannon Beach Vacation Rentals as a two-week rental. It was called Pacific Breeze. 12 years living in a rather large home is quite conducive to accumulating lots of stuff. We filled box after box after box. The stuff just kept coming. We thought it would never end. Part of the complication was that we had to decide as we packed what group each item fell into. 1. Going with us in the RV. 2. Staying out for Pacific Breeze renters. 3. Going with us on a plane or boat in the next leg of our travel. 4. Stored for future use. 5. Thrift. 6. Dumpster. Ten days after we picked up the RV, we were ready to leave, and boy do I mean we were ready.

We drove all of 75 miles on the first day. We picked up Christie’s friend Alyx and stayed our first night in an RV park there. Alyx and Christie were close friends in Cannon Beach before she moved. She would travel with us for a week or so then fly home from California.

To be continued.
